Sailing Update

Two Handed Regatta

A wild, wicked, windy, westerly was what greeted the brave double handed boats on Sunday as they stood on the pontoon wondering why they got out of bed.
The one of series of races was an ideal time for some single handed sailors to try out boats with 2 or maybe 3 sails for a change.

Tom teamed up with Dan B, while Rob got Ceri to crew for him. Chris was sailing with Mona, while Stella joined Will in the Feva. Andrew took Lauran as his crew and finally Abi took the Commodore as crew on his birthday.

With plenty of wild gusts, and occasional capsizes, the boats battled the best they could against the conditions as much as each other.

An unfortunate boom to the head made Abi choose the wise decision not to carry on. A similar experience befell Will in the Feva who retired in the first race.

Throughout the day all the boats were changing places being equally matched in the challenging conditions. Tom & Dan took the first race, but could not repeat his performance in the other two races, having to settle for second place each time. Chris & Mona took first place in the second race, and it was Rob & Ceri taking the win in the final race.

With all the changing places the overall results were not clear till the final boat crossed the line. In the end…

1st – Tom & Dan B
2nd – Chris & Mona
3rd – Rob & Ceri

Well done to all for being part of the day, and thanks especially to the OD and Safety Officers who were kept busy throughout the racing.

New Series – Afternoon Racing

On Sunday we start the new series with the new PY handicaps.

We also move to afternoon racing. Triangle Race at 12pm, main fleet starting at 2pm.

RYA Youth Training Opportunities

The RYA has unveiled plans to reinvigorate junior racing in the UK by placing more emphasis on regional and club racing.

The revamped British Youth Sailing programme will see the current system of U16 national and zone squads replaced with Regional Training Groups (RTGs) from autumn 2020.

Each of the six RYA Regions will boast its own RTGs, delivering national-level coaching regionally to arm young sailors with the skills they need to transition into youth classes, and prepare the most experienced for international competition.

They will promote inclusive and accessible training across the UK with the ultimate goal of encouraging more young sailors to take up and stay in the sport.
Training will be adapted to meet the varying needs of each group and will be delivered by experienced junior and youth coaches.

British Sailing Team members will regularly attend RTGs to inspire and mentor young sailors. Integrated support will also come from RYA Racing resources developed by experts in Sports Science and Medicine and Coaching Development.

Sailors will be invited from clubs and class associations, with the 2020 British Youth Sailing Regional Junior Championships being the first major opportunity for sailors to show aptitude for inclusion.

Training will take place once a month between October and April each year as a supplement to sailors’ normal club and class racing and training activity.

This is a great chance for some of our local sailors to learn more skills in different, and local, venues. As a Club we will look to support this, so watch this space!
